Understanding the IPCC

The single largest governmental entity involved in the business of Global Warming is the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change).  The IPCC puts out large reports every 4 years.  These are known as AR’s (Assessment Reports).  The are numbered in order of release.  The next one will be titled AR5 and it is due out in 2011.  The last was AR4 and it was released in 2007.

The IPCC has been under lots of scrutiny in the last year for a variety of reasons.  Significant mistakes have been found in these reports.  All of these mistakes made the threat of climate change more significant than the science stated.  Without going into the details of each mistake, the fact that these mistakes always exaggerated the threat of global warming is the single most compelling piece of evidence that there is a problem with the IPCC.

The fundamental problem for the IPCC is in the actual design.  There are three main working groups for the IPCC.  They are listed as follows:

Working Group 1:  Asses the scientific aspects of climate change.

Working Group 2:  Asses the impact that climate change will have on the world. Economic and otherwise.

Working Group 3:  Recommend options to mitigate climate change.

Each of those overall assignments is based on the assumption that global warming (climate change) is happening.  Then each group focuses on how to support the specific assignment.

Not a single group has the task of determining if Global Warming is real.  If there is one thing that government bureaucrats are good at doing, it is to only do precisely what they have to do.  Sticking their head out by dissenting is not what bureaucracy encourages.

Since their task is to generate potential threats and solutions to global warming… That is exactly what they do.  When this is taken into account with the problem of integrity in science…  It is easy to see how science and the government agencies have gotten us to where we are now.

In Comparison

Lets compare the proposed danger of Global Warming to an imaginary, but humorous threat facing the human race known as killer rabbits.  Many people have seen the rare and incredibly dangerous species of rabbit shown in the movie Monty Pythons and the Holy Grail.

In order to deal with this deadly threat of killer rabbits, I think a Intergovernmental Panel on Killer Rabbits be formed.  Being creative bureaucrats we are will name this group the IPKR.  The IPKR will be formed into three working groups much like the IPCC.

The Inconvenient Skeptic

Killer Rabbit

Working Group 1.    They will study the scientific aspects of the danger of KILLER RABBITS.  Things that must be known.

1. How quickly could KILLER RABBITS reproduce?
2. Is it the same as normal rabbits?
3. Can KILLER RABBITS reproduce with normal rabbits?
4. How many people can a KILLER RABBIT kill in a minute.
a.  Does it matter if they are a knight or not?
5. How quickly will the Earth be covered 6 feet deep in KILLER RABBITS?
6. Can a coyote kill a KILLER RABBIT?
7. Can anything but a Holy Hand Grenade stop a KILLER RABBIT?
8. What exactly do KILLER RABBITS eat?

Working Group 2.    Asses the impact of KILLER RABBITS on humanity and the rest of the Earth.

1. What about Polar Bears?  Do KILLER RABBITS kill polar bears as well?
2. What will be the impact if all of the world’s carrots are gone?
3. Can swimming  KILLER RABBITS hunt killer whales?
4. Is Bugs Bunny a KILLER RABBIT in disguise?
a. Does that explain why Elmer Fudd had so much trouble with him?

Working Group 3.    Recommend plans to deal with the KILLER RABBITS.

1. Provide Holy Hand-grenades to areas most infested with KILLER RABBITS.
2. Create a specially modified race of Coyote’s that can eat  KILLER RABBITS.
3. Reduce KILLER RABBITS by oppressing all copies of the Search for the Holy Grail.

In all seriousness, if a government offered jobs to answer all of these questions and offered lots of money to the people that found the answers.  Would people take the job?

Would any of those people ask the question, “is there such a thing as a killer rabbit?”
